Alphabet Ox Tenugui
This Alphabet Ox is both educational for little ones and illustrates a moment in the story of the Great Race, in which all the animals of the Chinese zodiac claimed their places in the zodiac and were ranked from one to twelve. Long ago, the Jade Emperor wanted twelve guards and announced his wish to have a race to determine the winners. A swift river separated the animals from the finish line at the Heavenly Gate. The diligent Ox started out first because he knew he was slow and needed more time, but was soon overtaken by the clever Rat and Cat. The river, however, held up the Rat and Cat who did not want to swim, so they hopped on the kindly Ox for a ride across. Halfway across, the Rat pushed the Cat off into the river, which is why the Cat is not in the zodiac. As the two neared the finish line, the Rat jumped off the Ox’s back to claim first animal before the Ox lumbered across in second place.
